Piper Whelan was raised on her family’s ranch in southern Alberta, where they’ve raised purebred seedstock since 1929 and currently raise purebred Maine-Anjou cattle. She grew up riding, excelling in junior livestock exhibitions, and immersing herself in the history, art, and culture of the west. A lover of words from a young age, Piper was never without a book in her backpack, and spent plenty of late nights reading under the covers with a flashlight.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Alberta and a Bachelor of Journalism at the University of King’s College in Halifax, Piper worked in children’s publishing and freelanced before joining the staff of Canadian Cattlemen, the country’s top beef publication with more than eight decades of history. She is currently the magazine’s field editor, reporting on news in the Canadian beef industry, new research, and issues facing beef producers, and she profiles ranchers and farmers across Canada.

Based in southern Alberta, Piper is a regular contributor to Western Horse Review, reporting on rodeo, western performance horse disciplines, and western lifestyle. She previously wrote for Top Stock, Atlantic Beef & Sheep, and various beef breed publications. She is currently working on her first novel.
